WILTON, CT — Cannondale, the bicycle maker founded in Wilton in 1971, is closing its longtime headquarters here and consolidating its North American sales and operations in Santa Cruz, California, according to reporting by Bicycle Retailer (opens in a new tab).

The company told employees and dealers of the decision on Wednesday. California is also home to Santa Cruz and Cervélo, two other brands owned by Cannondale's parent company, Pon.Bike. Cannondale's global headquarters will move to Woudenberg in the Netherlands, which is currently its European base. Global research, development and engineering will remain in Freiburg, Germany.

About 143 workers affected

In a notice filed with the Connecticut Department of Labor, the company said almost all employees at the Wilton office will be affected and that the closure and separations are permanent. The notice lists 143 workers, including some who work remotely and some who are not based in Connecticut. Some are employees of Pacific Cycle, another Pon.Bike business unit based in Madison, Wisconsin.

According to the filing, the first separations are expected on December 21, 2026, and will continue in phases through December 31, 2027. The Wilton office is expected to be fully closed by mid-2027, with the transition taking place over roughly the next six months.

What changes for dealers

Retailers will have a single point of contact for Cannondale, Santa Cruz and Cervélo, with Cannondale adding outside sales representatives who cover all three brands. The company said the aim is to make it easier for retailers to work with Cannondale and reach more of the Pon.Bike portfolio, and that each brand will keep its own identity, models and relationship with riders.

A Connecticut name

Cannondale took its name from a train station in Wilton. It later moved its headquarters to nearby Bethel before returning to Wilton in 2013. Pon acquired the company in 2022 as part of its purchase of Dorel Sports, and Cannondale last announced a workforce reduction that same year.
